Lahore: On July 29, the Punjab government sanctioned a new garbage tax that will affect both residential and commercial properties throughout the province.
The newly approved policy mandates that households, businesses, and even residents in informal settlements will be liable for this tax.
In rural areas, the monthly garbage tax structure is as follows:
- Residents of 5 Marla houses will be charged Rs. 200.
- Households with about 10 marla and 1 kanal will have to pay 400 rupees.
For rural businesses, the new charges are:
- Small shops will incur a Rs. 300 monthly fee.
- Medium-sized enterprises will face a Rs. 700 monthly tax.
- Large entities such as factories, workshops, and petrol stations will also pay Rs. 700.
In urban areas, the garbage tax rates are higher:
- Residents of 5 Marla houses will pay Rs. 300 per month.
- Those living in 10 Marla houses will be taxed Rs. 500.
- One kanal to ten marla houses will pay a levy of Rs. 2,000.
- Larger houses will have a monthly fee of Rs. 5,000.
Urban businesses will be taxed at these rates:
- Small commercial shops will pay Rs. 500 per month.
- Medium-sized enterprises will face a Rs. 1,000 monthly tax.
- Large enterprises, workshops, and factories would pay an additional Rs. 3,000.
This new garbage tax is designed to enhance waste management services across Punjab, promoting cleaner and healthier communities. The government aims to generate sufficient revenue to improve waste collection, disposal, and recycling processes. By involving both rural and urban areas, the policy ensures that every part of the province contributes to maintaining a clean environment.
Residents and businesses are expected to comply with the new tax to support these improvements.
