Lahore Adds 5 New Tehsils to Boost Administrative Efficiency

In a significant move to enhance administrative efficiency, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the creation of five new tehsils in Lahore. This development, reported on August 21, is part of the government’s broader efforts to address Lahore’s expanding population and streamline governance.

The proposal for the new tehsils has been circulated among ministers for final approval. Five Grade-17 officers have also been designated by the Punjab government as deputy commissioners for the newly formed tehsils, which comprise Lahore City, Sadar, Wagah, Shalimar, and Ravi

Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman emphasized that the administrative and financial matters of these new tehsils will be managed in line with the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The creation of these tehsils will take place within the current boundaries of Lahore District, with population distribution remaining stable. This reorganization expands Lahore’s existing five sub-units into ten, which will enhance the district’s administrative framework.

As part of this initiative, the Punjab government will recruit 210 new employees to serve in various roles across the new tehsils. The personnel will comprise clerks, support personnel, assistant commissioners, and other roles to guarantee that every tehsil has the tools necessary to run efficiently. Additionally, each tehsil has been allocated a budget of PKR 2.8 million for development and administrative expenses.

The annual combined revenue from these tehsils, including TMEs (Tehsil Municipal Entities), land revenue, and water rates, is projected to reach PKR 10.86 billion. An additional PKR 7.28 crore will be allocated to the District Education Authority to further support the new administrative units.

Lahore’s population has now surpassed 13 million, creating a demand for better governance and more efficient administrative structures. The creation of these additional tehsils is a critical step towards addressing the city’s needs, particularly in densely populated areas like the City zone. By expanding administrative coverage, the Punjab government aims to improve service delivery and ensure that Lahore remains well-governed in the face of its rapid growth.
