Rawalpindi: To facilitate citizens under the newly introduced ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ housing scheme, the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) has taken a significant step by establishing a help desk in Rawalpindi. This development, which was reported on August 23, marks a critical phase in the implementation of the housing initiative, which aims to provide affordable homes to low-income families across Punjab.
The ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ scheme is spearheaded by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and is part of the provincial government’s broader vision to address the housing crisis in the region. With the ever-increasing demand for affordable housing, this initiative offers a lifeline to individuals who struggle to secure a roof over their heads, particularly workers and laborers who form the backbone of the province’s economy.
One of the key features of this scheme is the simplified application process, which removes many bureaucratic hurdles that often prevent low-income individuals from accessing government schemes. Additionally, the installment plans offered under the scheme are designed to be manageable, ensuring that beneficiaries are not overburdened financially.
To qualify for the scheme, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. They need to be residents of Punjab with a monthly income of less than PKR 60,000. Furthermore, they should not already own a house, ensuring that the program reaches those most in need of assistance. Under the scheme, eligible individuals can apply for interest-free loans of up to PKR 1.5 million, which can be used to construct homes on smaller plots. These loans come with a seven-year repayment period, providing beneficiaries ample time to repay without financial strain.
The government has set an ambitious target of constructing over 3,000 homes in each district of Punjab, starting with key cities like Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. This large-scale construction project reflects the government’s commitment to improving living conditions for low-income families and tackling the housing shortage across the province.
