PM Sharif Reviews PWD Closure, Pushes for E-Office System

Islamabad: On Sunday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting to review the legal procedures and finalize the steps concerning the closure of the Public Works Department (PWD), according to an August 26 report. The discussions primarily focused on ensuring a smooth transition and addressing key issues related to the shutdown of the department.

During the meeting, PM Sharif made it clear that financial compensation packages for employees impacted by the PWD’s closure would not be extended to those found guilty of serious corruption. He emphasized that the government will only support honest workers who serve with integrity. Additionally, the Prime Minister instructed the relevant authorities to present a plan outlining how ongoing PWD projects would be transferred to provincial governments and other concerned departments. The final recommendations for the closure of the PWD will be submitted to the federal cabinet for approval.

In a show of support for diligent former PWD employees, PM Sharif also called for the implementation of a proposal to provide age relaxation to those who had short service periods. This initiative aims to re-employ competent and honest former staff members who were affected by the department’s closure. The meeting was attended by several key ministers and high-ranking government officials, ensuring that all relevant parties were included in the discussions.

In another significant development, PM Sharif issued a directive aimed at modernizing government operations. He tasked the Ministry of Information Technology, along with other relevant departments, to ensure the full implementation of the e-office system across all government offices. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to transition to paperless operations within a month, promoting transparency and efficiency in government work.

The Prime Minister underscored that the e-office system is a top priority for his administration, as it will help streamline administrative procedures and reduce bureaucratic delays. PM Sharif also made it clear that any delays in the implementation of this system would not be tolerated. To ensure accountability, he requested a progress report on the e-office rollout within two weeks, stressing the importance of swift action.

These developments reflect the government’s commitment to reform and modernization, with a focus on efficiency, transparency, and integrity in public service. The closure of the PWD and the introduction of the e-office system are seen as crucial steps in achieving these goals.
