Karachi: As reported on June 10, the first stage of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) project is expected to be finalized by 2025. This stage aims to deliver 260 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Karachi, effectively addressing the city’s persistent water scarcity problems.
Significant progress is being made on this crucial project, which is overseen by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The first stage alone will substantially alleviate water shortages in Karachi. Once the second phase is also completed, an additional 390 MGD will be supplied, bringing the total to 650 MGD. This will significantly enhance the city’s water supply infrastructure, providing a reliable and sustainable source of water to meet the needs of its growing population.
The total cost of the K-IV project is estimated at PKR 126 billion, with over PKR 40 billion already expended. The project’s financial and logistical aspects reflect a major undertaking aimed at addressing one of Karachi’s most critical challenges. The substantial investment underscores the government’s commitment to improving the urban infrastructure and quality of life for Karachi’s residents.
The K-IV project was initially approved in 2014 by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) government at an estimated cost of PKR 25.552 billion. The project was conceived as a collaborative effort, with a 50% funding contribution from the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) government. In the 2014-15 budget, PKR 849 million was allocated to kick-start the project. However, over the years, the scope and cost of the project have expanded significantly, reflecting the growing needs and complexities associated with urban water supply in a megacity like Karachi.
The project’s initial phases faced several delays due to administrative, financial, and logistical challenges. However, renewed efforts and increased funding have accelerated the pace of work, with authorities now confident in meeting the 2025 completion target for the first phase. This phase is crucial as it will set the foundation for subsequent expansions and ensure a steady increase in water supply to the city.
The successful completion of the K-IV project is expected to have far-reaching benefits, including improved public health, economic growth, and enhanced quality of life.
