Federal Minister Briefed on 'Gilgit Package' Road Projects

The meeting included a detailed discussion on the “Gilgit Package,” which encompasses road projects connecting Gilgit to Chitral, Shandoor, Mansehra, and other regions. These projects are aimed at improving the overall infrastructure and connectivity in the northern areas, which are vital for tourism and regional development. Aleem Khan noted that enhancing security and facilities on these highways would attract more tourists and travelers, boosting the local economy.

During the briefing, Aleem Khan highlighted that the Gilgit-Khunjerab Motorway could be a “Game Changer,” providing crucial access to China and Central Asia. This motorway is part of a larger vision to improve trade routes and facilitate smoother transport of goods and services across borders. He also stressed the need for robust land connectivity through road and rail to Gwadar, which is a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The minister insisted on maintaining high construction standards and directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) chairman to appoint diligent and skilled officers to oversee the projects. He emphasized that merely spending funds is not enough; government departments must also focus on boosting their revenue and ensuring that the projects are sustainable in the long term.

Aleem Khan encouraged NHA officers to use their expertise to develop international project models, aiming to increase the NHA’s annual income. He pointed out that innovation and efficiency in project management could significantly enhance the authority’s performance and financial health. In discussing infrastructure in the northern region, Aleem Khan reiterated that the Gilgit-Khunjerab Motorway and the connectivity to Gwadar are both pivotal for regional development and national progress.

Furthermore, it was announced that the NHA will receive an additional 23 billion rupees this year to construct and operate new toll plazas. This funding is expected to enhance the operational capacity of the NHA and contribute to better maintenance of the existing road network. The meeting also resulted in important decisions regarding NHA projects across the four provinces, focusing on ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

Aleem Khan’s emphasis on high standards and revenue generation reflects the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth. The ‘Gilgit Package’ is poised to significantly transform the region, enhance connectivity, and open new avenues for trade and tourism.
