The Rawalpindi Ring Road project was started Monday by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO).
The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) chairman, Tariq Mehmood Murtaza, cut the ribbon on the Thallian project during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Directors General, RDA Tahir Zafar Abbasi, Chief Engineering Officer RDA Dr Habib ul Haq Randhawa, the FWO team In-charge Col. Muhammad Irfan, and others attended the event.
Under the supervision of RDA, Tariq Mehmood Murtaza announced that the 38,3 km of the Rawalpindi Ring Road will be constructed within two years from Baanth (N-5) to Thallian (M-2). The project was awarded to the FWO by RDA for a value of Rs 22.8 billion and the authority concerned was requested to complete the project as soon as possible.
Rawalpindi and Islamabad are twin cities. They have a lot of traffic on the roads. The purpose of the project is to relieve traffic congestion. A detailed briefing on the Rawalpindi Ring Road project by Chief Engineer Rawalpindi Development Authority Dr Habib ul Haq Randhawa informed the audience that the project would span 38.3 kilometres in length.
It is expected to cost Rs Rs33,694.43 million for the project to be completed with the approval of the Punjab government. In total, the Ring Road project will cost Rs6724.73 million for land acquisition and Rs 26,969.70 million for construction.
The design speed will be 120 km/h, said the Chief Engineer. The Ring Road will have six lanes and five interchanges to connect it to the National Highway. These roads are at Baanth, Chakbeli Road, Adiala Road, Chakri Road and terminating at M-2.
